About College

Ahmedpur, a township in the lap of the Balaghatmountain  Ranges, was a taluka in Osmanabad district and now in the district of Latur has ever remained a famine stricken area with consequences like poverty and illiteracy. Having no industrial background, farming, that too, non irrigated, has been main and only source of earning in the surrounding villages. Poverty and lack of educational facilities left the area educationally backward and underdeveloped. Taking all these aspects into consideration the visionary group of this taluka cametogether and established the educational society “Vichar Vikas Mandal”. This society is established to provide higher education to the youths and to inculcate in them the sense of unity, discipline, integrity and social responsibility. With this noble view the society has established a college having Arts, Science and Commerce faculties in 1969 with the motto “Dnyan yagyachi sari na pawati ” meaning thereby “The yagya for knowledge is incomparable”. 1969 being the year of Mahatma Gandhi Birth Centenary the college has been named after the great Mahatma. Initially the college was housed in the rented quarters of Ahmedpur Housing Society. Due to paucity of funds satisfactory infrastructural facilities could not be provided. Majority of the students were from economically weaker families & hence the students of this area were unable to join the college without the facilities of hostel. Hence we could run the poor boys hostel  and provide free lodging and boarding to the poor boys by collecting jowar from farmers of this region. We have tried our level best to give the quality education to the rural youths.
The strength of the students is increased from 272 with 12 lecturers in 1969 to 3093 in 2006-07 with 112 lecturers .The number of non-teaching staff today is 53. The College has well equipped librarywhich has till date 91036 books worth Rs. 98,07,724=00 .The Peer Team of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) visited the college in January 2004 and the college was awarded B+ + grade with 84 marks.
